Creating Communities of Consent

Creating Communities of Consent

Did you know... 95% of high school students in Highline believe it is important to get permission before sexual activity with anyone.

This fall, we're launching a social norms campaign focused on student safety, healthy relationships and respect.

Using Social Norms to Encourage Positive Behavior

In 2017, Highline middle and high school students completed a brief survey about their attitudes and beliefs related to safety and sexual consent. This survey was anonymous and focused only on beliefs and opinions–not behavior.

Using survey results, we created posters that show what our students overwhelmingly believe in about consent, respect and kindness. The posters will be on display in middle and high schools.

"Social norm campaigns capture the values already important to a community and reflect them back, allowing us to see the commitment we already have to treat one another with care and respect," said Andie Lyons, Education Consultant at King County Public Health.

Social norms campaigns are well researched and are known to be effective at increasing positive behaviors.

"When students know that their peer community shares their values, they are more likely to act on those values," Andie said. "We know these issues are important to Highline students, staff and families, and we want to leverage the thoughtfulness already in our communities."
